Cambodia–Korea Relations: A Model of Strategic

Cambodia first established formal diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea on May 18, 1970. These ties were interrupted during the Khmer Rouge era but were officially restored on October 10, 1997, thanks in large part to the efforts of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who was Prime Minister at the time and now serves as President of the Senate. His leadership was instrumental in re-establishing the relationship, especially when other prominent political figures hesitated due to Cambodia’s historical connections with North Korea.

The revitalization and strengthening of Cambodia–Korea relations rest on two fundamental pillars: the sincere commitment of Cambodia’s leadership to reconnect with South Korea, and the steady understanding and responsiveness of Korean leaders to Cambodia’s national needs and aspirations. This reflects a robust and enduring partnership.

Over the years, the relationship has flourished, particularly in the fields of politics, trade, investment, and tourism. The Republic of Korea has consistently demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of Cambodia’s goals for self-reliant development, providing support across various contexts and reciprocating Cambodia’s goodwill and cooperation.

South Korea’s remarkable economic and social progress has further enhanced trade and investment flows between the two nations. Bilateral trade reached approximately USD 1.6 billion in 2024, positioning Korea as one of Cambodia’s most important and irreplaceable trade partners.
