Vice-Regal visit to Phnom Penh, Governor of South Australia

South Australia is well positioned to meet the region’s appetite for clean energy, trusted agrifood, digital capability, and world-class education, while strengthening long-term partnerships built on mutual respect and shared regional interests.

As Governor, I have had the privilege to undertake a series of visits to the region to pursue key South Australian objectives, including programs in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Throughout, I have been struck by the spirit of partnership and the shared sense of collaboration through which we listen, learn and grow together.

All this is recognised in the fact that Australia is ASEAN’s oldest dialogue partner, but of course our bilateral relationships long precede that.

In the case of Cambodia, it is a relationship of 73 year’s standing. As an old friend, I have been delighted to visit Phnom Penh and to be so warmly welcomed by the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly, and all my interlocutors.

With an eye to the mutual economic opportunities that are before us, particularly as the region gains momentum through education, energy, trade, and technological reform, it is a very propitious time to visit.

Here in Phnom Penh, it is immediately clear that Cambodia is setting bold national goals, investing in human capital, skills training and infrastructure, with strong interest in agriculture and agro-processing and the clean energy transition.
